Big Idea: Poverty doesn't just affect the wallet; it impacts the mind, body, and environment too! Dive into how moolah (or the lack of it) can shape a person’s growth.

The science-y bit

  • Goal: Understand how poverty affects human development.
  • Question: What's the mechanism or pathway of this influence?

The pathways - what brooks-gunn & duncan (1997) tell us

🍏 - Health and Nutrition

  • Poverty → Poor health → Cognitive deficits.
  • Fun Fact! Korenman, Miller & Sjaastad (1995) found that the effect of malnutrition (like stunting) on memory is kinda like being in a poor family for 13 years.

🏠 - Home Environment

  • Encompasses learning opportunities, time parents spend with kids, and the home's physical state.
  • Real World Example: Imagine two kids - one has books, puzzles, and a quiet room to study, while the other has none of that. Guess who's got a learning advantage?

👨‍👩‍👧 - Parental Interactions

  • Beyond just time spent, it's about the quality of time. Is it positive or negative? Supportive or discouraging?
  • Think about it: A parent shouting vs. a parent explaining patiently - massive difference, right?

🧠 - Parental Mental Health

  • Poor parents might have more mental health issues, which can affect how they treat their children.
  • Real World Parallel: If a parent is always stressed and upset, a child might start picking up these vibes and acting similarly.

🌆 - Neighbourhood Conditions

  • Low income areas can have high crime, poor schools, and fewer resources.
  • Example Time: If you're growing up in a neighborhood where you hear sirens daily and your school lacks basic supplies, that's gonna impact your learning experience.
