Hey there, mind explorer! Get ready to dive into the fascinating world of Cognitive Psychology. What's that, you ask? Well, it's the study of how you, me, and everyone else processes information. No boring lectures, promise! Just straight-up knowledge served with a side of fun. Let's get started.

Cognitive approach principles

Principle Central here we come!

Scientists can study mental processes

Ever wondered how we predict the behaviour of things we can't see? Let's think about physicists studying tiny particles that are invisible to our eyes. They use complex models to predict the particle's behaviour, just like cognitive psychologists. We create models of our mind's workings to understand how we think, remember, and solve problems.

Mental representations guide our behaviour

Ever gotten lost but miraculously found your way home? That's because your brain created a mental map! Edward Tolman, a psychology rockstar, showed that rats could navigate mazes without rewards, just by forming cognitive maps. We humans do the same. When something happens (stimulus), it doesn't just trigger a knee-jerk reaction. Our mental maps (our black box) help us decide how to respond.
