Schwartz's theory of basic values 🏹

Think of Schwartz as the Harry Potter of psychology, creating a wizarding world with 10 core values. He believed these values exist in every culture and shape our behavior. Let's take a quick tour! 🌌

Openness to change

  • Self-direction: Like being the captain of your own ship. Making choices, creating paths, exploring.
  • Real-world example: Ever tried cooking without a recipe? You’re in charge of the ingredients and the process - that's self-direction!
  • Stimulation: Looking for excitement and novelty.
  • Real-world example: Craving for a new horror movie or an adrenaline-pumping roller coaster ride? That's stimulation!

Self-enhancement

  • Hedonism: Seeking pleasure for oneself.
  • Real-world example: When you eat your favorite dessert just because it makes you happy, that's hedonism!
  • Achievement: Striving for personal success according to social standards.
  • Real-world example: Studying hard to ace that math test? You're chasing achievement!
  • Power: Seeking social status, prestige, control, or dominance.
  • Real-world example: Dreaming of being the class president? Power is your value!

Conservation

  • Security: Craving for safety, harmony, and stability in relationships, self, and society.
  • Real-world example: Wanting a peaceful, safe neighborhood? That's security!
  • Conformity: Restraining actions that may upset others or violate norms.
  • Real-world example: Following school dress code even though you'd love to wear that funky hat? Hello, conformity!
  • Tradition: Respect and acceptance for customs and ideas provided by culture or religion.
  • Real-world example: Lighting candles during Hanukkah because it's a cultural tradition? That's tradition!
