Transactional stress model (by richard lazarus & co.) ๐Ÿค

The Transactional What Now?

 

Think of stress as a tennis match between you and the world. You serve challenges and the world serves them back. Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose. This model explains that tug-of-war.

Primary appraisal ๐Ÿค”

  • Here's where you eye the ball and decide:
  • Irrelevant: "This doesn't bother me." (A friend failing a test when you aced it.)
  • Benign and Positive: "This is great!" (Getting the perfect prom date.)
  • Harmful & a Threat: "Uh-oh, can I handle this?" (A math test when you're bad at math.)
  • Harmful & a Challenge: "Bring it on!" (A soccer match when you're feeling confident.)

Secondary appraisal ๐Ÿ‹๏ธ

This is where you flex your coping muscles

  • Think about what resources you have (like friends, skills, or time) and if they'll help you beat stress.

  • Low self-esteem? You might find situations more stressful because you feel you don't have what it takes to cope.

๐Ÿ“ Real-World Example: Speisman et al's film experiment (1964)

  • What Happened? The boys watched a super stressful movie with different soundtracks.

  • Results? Those with a traumatic soundtrack felt more stress.

  • Lesson? Your view of a situation can change how stressed you feel. Imagine watching a horror movie with cartoon sound effects! Different vibe, right?
