Introduction to brain development

The brain's like a master puzzle with different pieces coming together at just the right time! If you've ever wondered how we go from little babies to thinking and learning humans, this process is how it all starts. Let's break it down into four major stages:

The four stages of brain development

  • Neurogenesis (Brain Cell Birth)

  • What Happens? New neurons are born.
  • When? Before you're even born!
  • Fun Fact: You had more neurons at birth than you do now because the brain makes extra, just in case!
  • Real-World Example: Think of it like baking extra cookies for a party; some might break, so you bake more than needed.
  • Migration (Brain Cell Travel)

  • What Happens? Neurons move to where they should be in the brain.
  • When? Around 9 weeks after conception.
  • Real-World Example: Imagine neurons are like travelers on a highway, following the GPS to their destination.
  • Differentiation (Building Connections)

  • What Happens? Connections between neurons grow, like friendships!
  • When? It starts after birth and explodes, reaching up to 40,000 new connections per second.
  • Real-World Example: Think of it like a networking event where everyone's handing out business cards and making friends.
  • Pruning (Trimming the Extras)

  • What Happens? Some connections and neurons are cut away.
  • When? This continues until puberty ends and later in old age.
  • Real-World Example: It's like pruning a tree; you cut away the branches you don’t need to make the tree healthier.
  • Cool Side Note: This explains why teenagers can be moody; their brains are going through a massive spring cleaning!

The "use It or l ose It" principle

  • What's This About? If neurons aren't used, they're lost, like deleting unused apps on your phone.
  • Real-World Example: Remember the time you learned a word in another language but forgot it because you never used it? That's your brain pruning away the unneeded stuff.
