- Schools should be safe and enjoyable, but sometimes, they can become a place of fear due to bullying or ostracization.
- Real-world Example: Think about that school scene from "Mean Girls," where school hallways seemed more like a wild jungle rather than a place of learning!
Solution - the jigsaw classroom! 🔧🧩
- Elliott Aronson's Jigsaw Classroom technique helps to reduce conflict.
- It promotes cooperative learning. Students work together on different aspects of a task, which are then combined to create a final product.
- Real-world Example: Imagine a group project on a new superhero character. One student designs the costume, another writes the origin story, another creates the superpowers. All these pieces fit together like a jigsaw to create the final superhero!
The role of the teacher 👩🏫
- Teachers play a crucial role in enforcing cooperation and respect, and sometimes even allocate roles within a group to ensure everyone gets to participate equally.
- They support the process and reward the entire group's product, rather than individual contributions.
- Real-world Example: It's like the coach of a basketball team - they set the game plan, assign roles to players, and celebrate the team's victory, not just the star player's performance.
