🌟 Main Idea: How can a biological factor, like serotonin, influence prosocial behavior? Does it affect our free will? Let's dive in!

The study by crockett et al (2010) 🔍

  • Goal: Understand serotonin's role in prosocial behavior.

  • Subjects: 30 healthy peeps! (Avg age: 26)

  • Design Type: Repeated measures.

The two conditions 🎭

The SSRI Condition: Participants gulped down some citalopram.

  • 🧠 Citalopram is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). In simple words, it's like a bodyguard that stops serotonin from leaving the party early, making sure the fun lasts longer!

The Placebo Condition: Participants had a harmless fake drug.

Fun fact: The experiment was double-blind and counter-balanced! (This means neither the participants nor the researchers knew who took what, and the order of taking the drug or placebo was switched for different participants.)

Task for participants 💡

After sipping on their drink (SSRI or placebo), participants had to solve moral dilemmas.

  • Scenario 1: Would you push a dude off a bridge to stop a train from hitting 5 people? (That's the personal harm!)
  • Scenario 2: Would you hit a lever that changes the train's path, causing it to hit one person instead of five? (The impersonal harm!)
