Linear displacement & linear distance ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿงญ

  • Linear Displacement

    • Definition: When something (like a soccer ball or you) moves from Point A to Point B, it undergoes a displacement.
    • Think about it like this: if you move from the kitchen straight to your room, your displacement is the straight path you took.
    • It's all about how far and in which direction you moved.
    • It's a vector (a fancy term which means it has size and direction ๐ŸŒโ†—๏ธ).
    • Symbols: Δr or sometimes dr (change in position).
    • Measurements
      • Size: meters (m)
      • Direction: degrees (º) or radians (rad) OR coordinates like horizontal, vertical, lateral.
  • Linear Distance

    • Definition: Just how far you went, without caring about the direction.
    • Imagine walking around your house randomly; the total steps you took = distance!
    • It's a scalar (it only has size, no direction ๐Ÿ“).
    • Symbol: d.
    • Measurement: meters (m).

๐ŸŒ Real World Example: Say you walked 10m straight towards the north to get ice-cream ๐Ÿฆ. Your linear displacement would be 10m north, but your linear distance is just 10m.

Linear velocity ๐Ÿš€

  • Velocity

    • Definition: How fast and in which direction something's position is changing.
    • Think of it like this: if you're cycling straight down a road, your velocity tells you how fast and in which direction you're going.
    • It's a vector (has size and direction ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธโžก๏ธ).
    • Symbol: v.
    • Measurement
      • Size: meters per second (m/s)
      • Direction: degrees (º) or radians (rad) OR coordinates.
  • Speed

    • Definition: Just how fast you're going.
    • If you're on a skateboard, your speed tells you how quickly the scenery blurs by!
    • It's a scalar (only size ๐Ÿš€).
    • Part of velocity (the size part).

๐ŸŒ Real World Example: Picture driving a car 60km/h straight east. Your velocity is 60km/h east, but your speed is just 60km/h.
