Skill classification criteria

  • Distinctiveness of movement characteristics (discrete, serial, continuous)
  • Stability of the environment (closed, open)
  • Size of the musculature involved (fine, gross)

Movement distinctiveness

  • Discrete: These skills have a clear start and end. They are short, precise actions like a golf swing, a penalty stroke in field hockey, or a forward roll in gymnastics.
  • Example: Throwing a dart is a discrete skill as it starts with aiming and ends once the dart is released.
  • Serial: These are a series of discrete skills performed in a specific sequence, forming a more complex movement. For instance, in gymnastics, a routine could consist of flips and somersaults linked together.
  • Example: The triple jump in track and field, which consists of a hop, skip, and jump, is a serial skill.
  • Continuous: These skills don't have a clear start and end; they are repetitive and rhythmic, performed over an extended period. Swimming, running, and cycling are examples of continuous skills.
  • Example: Marathon running is a continuous skill as it involves repetitive foot strikes over a long duration.

Environment stability

  • Open: Skills performed in a changing, unpredictable environment, where the athlete must adapt to external factors like teammates, opponents, weather, and boundaries. These skills rely on perception and motor coordination.
  • Example: A soccer player must adjust their strategy based on the actions of their teammates and opponents, which makes soccer an open skill.
  • Closed: Skills performed in a stable, predictable environment where the movement pattern is consistent each time.
  • Example: A gymnast performing a routine on the pommel horse follows a set sequence of movements, making it a closed skill.
