What's mental practice?

  • Definition: Mental practice, also known as mental rehearsal, is imagining specific components of a movement without physically doing it.
  • Real-world example: Imagine a dancer planning out a challenging foot sequence in her mind, or a golfer picturing the perfect wrist position during a swing.

Why is it useful?

  • It aids in understanding and mastering the cognitive components of the movement - basically, the "thinking" parts that involve sequence, timing, or strategy.
  • Real-world example: A chess player mentally strategizing moves in advance. Even though they're not moving the pieces yet, they're already "playing" in their mind!

Mental vs physical rehearsal

  • While mental practice is beneficial, it's generally seen as a sidekick to physical practice.
  • Research Insight: Individuals who engage in both mental and physical rehearsal tend to learn faster than those who only do physical practice.
