Key concept vO2max 🌟

  • It's like the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use while exercising at your highest level. Think of it as your body's "battery level" for exercise! 🔋
  • The best way to measure it? A test that increases exercise intensity till you're exhausted while measuring your gas exchange (like how much O2 you're using).

Problem: This gold standard test is not always practical.

  • Needs special expertise and gear 🛠️
  • Can only test one person at a time 🚶
  • Some tests require max effort, which isn't ideal for everyone 💦

Solution: Field-based tests! Let's look at three popular ones.

1️⃣ Multistage fitness test (MSfT) AKA beep or bleep test 🎵

  • History: Created by Leger & Lambert in '82. Validated & promoted later on.
  • What's the deal? Run back and forth over 20 meters. Speed increases over time.
    • Starts slow (like a brisk walk 🚶‍♂️).
    • Speed goes up as the beeps get faster!
    • Score = Level & shuttles completed at that level (e.g., Level 10-6 = 6 shuttles in level 10).
  • Real-world analogy: It's like a video game where each level gets faster and harder!
  • Pros & Cons
    • 👍 Reliable & sensitive to training improvements.
    • 👎 Not super accurate & might not be ideal for all (e.g., kids or those with certain health conditions).

2️⃣ Cooper's 12-minute run 🏃‍♀️

  • Simply put: Run/walk as far as you can in 12 mins. Total distance helps estimate VO2max.
  • Real-world analogy: Imagine trying to catch as many Pokémon as you can in 12 minutes!
    • 👍 More comfortable for some people since it's self-paced.
    • 👎 Has some of the same limitations as the Beep Test.
