What's Motivation?🤔

  • Definition: Motivation is like the GPS and gas pedal of our actions! It’s about the direction we’re headed in (which destination we choose on our GPS) and the intensity or speed we're going at (how hard we press on that gas pedal).
  • Examples
    • Imagine wanting to be on the school soccer team, but not the gymnastics team. That's your direction.
    • Now, attending soccer practice but daydreaming about pizza? That’s low intensity. But training super hard, sometimes too hard, and messing up in a match? That's high intensity.

Direction vs. Intensity🧭💥

  • Direction: What we're attracted to or seeking out. It's like choosing if we want to head to a beach or a mountain for a vacation.
    • E.g., Some play sports to make friends (social reasons) while others do it to stay fit (health benefits).
  • Intensity: How hard we work towards something. Like deciding if you're driving in the fast lane or just cruising along the highway.
    • E.g., Two friends might both love tennis. One practices occasionally, while the other trains every single day, aiming to become the next Serena Williams.

Fun Analogy by Gage & Berliner (1984): Think of a car 🚗!

  • Engine (How powerful it is) = Intensity
  • Steering (Where it's going) = Direction

Most times, people who show up consistently also give it their all. Like an athlete who never misses a training session, they usually give 100%.
