Reciprocal style (style C) ๐Ÿ“

  • What it is: Also known as peer teaching or coaching. In this style, the teacher or coach sets the agenda (chooses the topic or topics to be learned) and encourages learners to work in pairs. Each person in the pair provides feedback to the other on their performance.
  • How it works: The teacher or coach can provide a task card with criteria for a successful performance. For example, in a gymnastics class, the task might be to perform six forward rolls. After the third roll, the learner receives feedback from their partner, the observer. After all six rolls, the pair discusses the performance, any improvements, and areas for further improvement.
  • Pros: This style is useful when learners are familiar with the tasks and are willing to help each other. Learners may feel more comfortable making mistakes, as they are not being judged by the teacher or coach. They can progress at their own pace and focus on specific areas of their performance.
  • Considerations: The teacher or coach may need to spend time teaching learners how to observe and provide feedback. Care must be taken in pairing learners, as not everyone can work cooperatively.
  • Real-world example: In a basketball practice, players could work in pairs to practice shooting. The observer would give feedback on the shooter's form and technique. After discussing the feedback, the shooter could implement the suggested changes in their next shots.

Divergent style (style H) ๐Ÿง

  • What it is: Also known as the problem-solving approach. In this style, the coach or teacher sets a problem or task and lets the learner work out a solution or solutions themselves.
  • How it works: The coach or teacher sets realistic problems and explains the scenario succinctly. This style leads to moments of innovation by the learners, allowing for increased independence and self-esteem.
  • Pros: When learners come up with their own solutions, they are more likely to implement them during the game. In team sports, different parts of the team can work on different problems.
  • Considerations: Learners need a lot of experience to use this method successfully. The teacher or coach must set realistic problems and explain the scenario clearly.
  • Real-world example: In a soccer practice, the coach could set a problem like: "How can the team improve their defense when the opponents have the ball?" Players could then brainstorm and test their solutions during practice. As they try their own ideas, players are more likely to buy into the strategy they develop.

๐ŸŽฏ Key Takeaway: The reciprocal style of teaching is great for feedback and peer coaching, while the divergent style fosters problem-solving and independence. Both can be highly effective, but it's essential to consider the experience and cooperation levels of the learners.
