Wetland basics

Definition: Wetlands are lands with soils that are always waterlogged. Think of it like a party where the floor is always slippery with water!

Varieties: Wetlands come in different shapes and sizes, with everything from marshes, fens, peatlands, to man-made reservoirs. It's like an underwater rainbow of habitats!

Wetland destruction & conservation

History: Wetlands used to be the world's most unpopular kid. They were drained, destroyed, and replaced with farms, cities, and factories throughout the 20th century. Like erasing a beautiful mural to make space for a parking lot.

The Ramsar Convention: Thankfully, wetlands gained some friends. The Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, was signed to protect wetlands. It's a kind of superhero pact to save the soggy soils!

Benefits of wetlands

Environment: Wetlands do lots of cool things. They control erosion, stabilize shorelines, reduce floods, and clean water. Kind of like an eco-friendly Swiss army knife!

Economy: Wetlands are not just eco-heroes but also economic powerhouses. They provide clean water, opportunities for tourism, fish, timber, and wildlife resources. Imagine them as a market that never closes!
