Sustainable development goals (SDGs)

  • Introduced in 2015 and set to exist until 2030, replacing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Imagine them as the Earth's roadmap to a better future!

  • There are 17 Goals! Just like 17 steps to a sustainable world. Here's the rundown:

    • Goal I: End extreme poverty by 2030. Imagine everyone earning more than $1.90 a day. A real issue, especially in sub-Saharan Africa where over 40% of the population lived under this line in 2015.

    • Goal II: End hunger and achieve sustainable food production. Think about all those food pictures on Instagram but available to everyone! This is crucial for places like sub-Saharan Africa where over half the population faces food insecurity.

    • Goal III: Improve healthcare across the board. Ever had a cold and felt miserable? Now think about 2 million new HIV infections or 200 million cases of malaria in 2015 alone. Ouch!

And so on up to Goal 17, all aimed at creating a better world. We'll dive into other Goals later!

Sustainable practices in various industries

  • Car manufacturing: Cars love lead. In fact, the car industry accounts for 60% of the world's lead use. Imagine a big pie, and cars take more than half! But did you know that remanufacturing and reconditioning cars, like they do in Cuba, can save a ton of resources?

  • Mobile phones: How often do you change your phone? Ever wonder what happens to the old one? It's not just an old phone, it's a goldmine, literally! Phones contain valuable resources such as gold and silver. If we could collect and recycle more phones, we could save about $500 million a year in the EU alone. Imagine buying all the ice cream you want with that!

  • Washing machines: Everybody needs clean clothes, right? But washing machines are energy-hungry and create waste. What if we used machines designed for hotels at home? You might not need a new wardrobe after all!

The circular economy

Think of it as Earth's favorite game of catch! It's about making sure that today’s waste becomes tomorrow’s raw materials and recycled products. So, in a way, your old soda can could become a part of your new bike! This is tied to Goal 12 of the SDGs.
