Hey future biologist! Ready to unravel the secrets of life itself? Let's dive into the DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) world. Think of it as the instruction manual that guides all the living things on Earth. 🌍

DNA - the double helix dance party 🎉

DNA looks like a twisted ladder, and it's known as a double helix. Picture two snakes wrapping around each other, and you'll get the idea!

Antiparallel strands - the opposite twins 👯

These strands are like two parallel lines, but they run in opposite directions. That's why they're called antiparallel.

  • One strand ends with a phosphate group (like a tiny hat 🎩).
  • The other ends with a deoxyribose sugar (a sweet treat 🧁).

If they didn't run in opposite directions, they wouldn't be able to form hydrogen bonds. Think of trying to shake hands but your arms are twisted around! Awkward, right?

The twisty helix 🌀

DNA has a helical shape, like a curly fry. The constant diameter of this shape is 2 nanometres (2nm). Imagine the width of a human hair, and then think 50,000 times smaller!
