What is whole genome sequencing (WGS)? 🧬

  • It's like reading every single letter in a massive book called "DNA!"
  • It's determining the entire base sequence of an organism's DNA.
  • Think of it as finding out every ingredient that makes up your favorite cake (or organism!).

Early achievements & landmarks 🧪

  • Started with bacteria and archaea in the 1990s. Why? They have smaller genomes, like a short recipe.
  • Now, it's like a party! Most organisms can be sequenced.
  • Table 3 (not provided here, but check your textbook) will show some big milestones!

Tech to the rescue! 💻

  • In 10 years, genomes sequenced increased 1000 times! (That's like upgrading from a tricycle to a jet plane!)
  • Faster and cheaper thanks to tech wizards.
  • Imagine buying a car for $100 million in 2001 but only $1,000 in 2020. That's how the cost of sequencing one human genome dropped!

Earth biogenome project 🌏

  • Aims to sequence the DNA of all known species.
  • Like a global library, but for genes!
