What is speciation?

Speciation is like a real-life game of transformation where a species transforms into something totally new, just like caterpillars changing into butterflies. But instead of a caterpillar growing wings, in speciation, the change happens over long periods of time and to a whole population of a species.

The splitting process

Imagine having a superpower of cloning yourself and living in two different cities at the same time. After a while, you'll notice differences in your clones due to different surroundings, friends, and experiences. This is similar to how speciation by splitting works.

 

In speciation by splitting, a species gets split into two separate populations, much like the way a chocolate bar gets divided. The split can happen due to many reasons like a geographical barrier - a new mountain range, a river or an ocean separating them.

Role of natural selection

After the split, nature's magic trick comes into play - natural selection. This is nature's way of adapting and evolving, kind of like updating an app on your phone to make it work better.

 

Natural selection starts acting differently on the two populations because they are living in different environments. It's like moving to a colder city, you would start wearing thicker clothes, maybe even grow a beard to keep warm - that's you adapting to your environment, which is what natural selection does to species.
