Fun Fact: Ever watched a balloon inflate and deflate? Well, guess what, your lungs do something quite similar! Let's talk about how much air goes in and out.

Lung volumes & what they mean 🌬

  • Tidal Volume (TV)

    • Like the tide of the ocean going in and out, this is the amount of fresh air we inhale and the same amount of used-up (stale) air we exhale during a normal breath.
    • Think of it like taking a normal breath while reading your favorite book!
  • Ventilation Rate

    • How many times you inhale or exhale in one minute.
    • Basically, it's like counting how many times a fish blinks its eyes in a minute (if only they blinked like we do!)
  • Vital Capacity (VC)

    • Imagine taking the DEEPEST breath you ever have, filling your lungs to the brim, and then exhaling every bit out. That's your vital capacity.
    • It's like sucking up a big milkshake through a straw in one go!
  • Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)

    • After you take a normal breath, this is the EXTRA amount you can inhale if you really push it.
    • Think of it like overfilling your water balloon just a tad without it bursting.
  • Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV)

    • After a normal exhale, it's the EXTRA amount you can still blow out.
    • Imagine squeezing out that last bit of toothpaste from the tube.
