🍬 Sweet Carbohydrate Fact! 🍭 Carbohydrates like sugars often have TWICE as many hydrogen atoms as oxygen atoms. Imagine a dance where every oxygen atom gets two hydrogen dance partners! 💃💃🕺

RuBP - a dancing debut 🎶

  • RuBP: A five-carbon sugar star.
  • When RuBP gets extra carbon and oxygen (but no hydrogen), it changes into glycerate 3-phosphate.
  • BUT, its hydrogen-to-oxygen dance ratio becomes less than 2:1. Uh-oh! 🚫💃💃🕺

Glycerate 3-phosphate’s makeover 💄💫

  • This molecule gets a makeover to become a carbohydrate.
  • What's needed? A splash of hydrogen!
  • The carboxyl group (think of it like a tired dance move) in glycerate 3-phosphate changes to an aldehyde group (a snazzy new step!).
