What is a nerve? 🧠

  • Think of nerves like highways made up of tons of car lanes (nerve fibres). But instead of cars, these lanes are packed with information zooming around!
  • Definition: A nerve is like a bundle or collection of nerve fibres. It's wrapped up in a protective coat (like a jacket!).

Size matters 📏

  • Fun Fact: The sciatic nerve is like the highway with the most lanes! It's the thickest and can be about 20mm across. That's wider than most candy canes!
  • The Optic Nerve is a superstar with between 770,000 and 1.7 million nerve fibres! It’s like a mega city's worth of information highways.
  • On the other hand, some smaller nerves might only have fewer than 100 fibres, like tiny countryside roads.
