Lymphocytes - A Quick Intro

  • What are they? 🤔

    • Cells in the adaptive immune system, the body's sophisticated defense team.
    • Roughly 1/4th (25%) of our white blood cells.
  • What do they look like? 🧐

    • Picture a cell with a big, round nucleus (like the yolk of a sunny side up egg!)
    • Just a tiny bit of cytoplasm around the nucleus.
  • Where do they hang out? 🏠

    • Mostly in the blood, but also in the lymphatic system.
    • Fun Fact! They're called 'lymphocytes' because of their presence in the lymphatic system.

The Lymphatic System - Nature's Drainage System

  • What is it? 🤔
    • A series of vessels that help drain extra fluid from our body tissues.
  • Special Locations: Lymph Nodes 📍
    • Think of them as rest stops along the lymphatic highway.
    • They’re swollen structures along lymph vessels.
    • Super-popular hangout spot for lymphocytes!

Antibodies - Lymphocytes’ Super Tool 🛠

  • What are they? 🤔
    • Large proteins made by lymphocytes.
    • Their main goal: Destroy the baddie pathogens!
  • How do they work? 🕵️‍♂️
    • Two main parts
      • Hypervariable region: Like a lock-picking set, it recognizes and binds to specific molecules on a pathogen.
      • Another region: Assists the body in combat. How? Two ways
        • Flags down phagocytes by making the pathogen stand out, like a neon sign.
        • Acts as a bouncer, preventing viruses from entering host cells.
