  • Sperm and egg cells are both gametes.
  • They have a haploid nucleus, which means they carry half the genetic material. 🧬
  • They play a relay race to pass on genes from mommy and daddy to baby.

Differences – it's like comparing batman to wonder woman 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️

  • Sperm Cells:

    • Active movers – Think of them as tiny Olympic swimmers, zipping around. 🏊‍♂️
    • No food storage – They travel light!
  • Egg Cells:

    • Slow movers – They prefer the royal treatment, getting escorted. 👑
    • Loaded with food reserves – Because an upcoming baby is hungry!

The great wall of egg – fertilization's front gate 🏰

  • Zona pellucida:
    • Glycoprotein layer which sperm can penetrate.
    • Imagine this as the club's VIP entrance – once one VIP (sperm) gets in, the bouncer (chemicals) stops others from crashing the party!
  • Binding proteins:
    • Helps the egg's plasma membrane and sperm's membrane have a sweet dance, fusing them together. 💃🕺
  • Cortical granules:
    • Tiny vesicles filled with enzymes.
    • Once a sperm enters the egg, these granules make the zona pellucida as tough as a fortress!
