Meet the dynamic duo - internal & external intercostal muscles! 🦸‍♀️

  • Location: Sandwiched between your ribs. Not like peanut butter & jelly, but you get the idea! 🥪
  • Two types
    • External Intercostal Muscles: The "Breath-IN" squad! 🌬️
    • Internal Intercostal Muscles: The "Breath-OUT" squad! 🌪️

Special features 🌟

  • They're antagonistic, which in this context doesn't mean they're enemies. It means one acts opposite to the other.
  • Their muscle fibers run in different directions. Imagine the external ones being like the rungs on a ladder, and the internal ones like diagonal stripes on a candy cane!

Action time - inhale & exhale adventures 💪

  • Inhale

    • External intercostal muscles do a power move and contract.
    • This expands the ribcage (like an umbrella opening up). 🌂
    • Internal intercostal muscles stretch out, kind of like a rubber band being pulled.
    • This stretching stores some cool energy thanks to a protein called titin. (Imagine a spring being loaded!)
  • Exhale

    • Time for the internal intercostal muscles to shine. They contract!
    • Ribcage becomes smaller, kind of like when you let go of a blown-up balloon. 🎈
    • External intercostal muscles get their turn to stretch.
