What is Combustion? 🔥

  • Combustion = scientific term for burning in air.
  • It produces carbon dioxide (CO2) when carbon-rich materials, like biomass, peat, coal, oil, and natural gas, burn.

Fun Fact: 🌋 The ignition point, or "flash point", is the minimum temperature at which these materials start burning. You need a toasty 500°C for coal, crude oil, and natural gas, while dry wood lights up at just over 400°C. That's hotter than the average oven's max temperature!

Carbon Sinks & Their Role 🌍

  • Carbon sinks = materials that can store carbon for a LONG time.
  • Biomass, peat, coal, oil, and natural gas are all carbon sinks. Think of them as Earth's natural carbon storage units.

Real-World Connection: 📦 Imagine your refrigerator as a carbon sink. It keeps your veggies (carbon) fresh and stored. But what happens if you take them out and cook (burn) them? Voilà! They're transformed, much like carbon sinks releasing CO2 when burned.

Natural Causes of Combustion 🔥

  • Earth's regular weather can't hit the flash points of these materials.
  • BUT, volcanic activity and lightning, especially in dried-out ecosystems (thanks to hot weather and drought), can spark fires.

For Instance: 🌩️ Lightning striking a dry forest can lead to wildfires, releasing stored carbon as CO2.

Ancient Climate Disasters🌍

  • 250 million years back, volcanoes in Siberia might have burned massive coal deposits.
  • Result? Mega CO2 release, super high temperatures, and the BIGGEST mass extinction event ever due to the greenhouse effect.
