The Four Main Roller Coasters (Types of pH curves) 🚀

  • Strong acid + Strong base 🍋+🧼
  • Strong acid + Weak base 🍋+🧽
  • Weak acid + Strong base 🍊+🧼
  • Weak acid + Weak base 🍊+🧽

Strong Acid + Strong Base Coaster 🎢

  • Starts low (pH ≈ 1) if the analyte (starting substance) is an acid. Starts high (pH ≈ 13) if it's a base.
  • Gradual slope at first, then a sharp peak (almost like the top of a roller coaster) near the equivalence point (where acid = base).
  • Ends either at the heights (pH ≈ 13) or the depths (pH ≈ 1), depending on the titrant (stuff we're adding).

Real-world example: It's like mixing lemon juice (acid) and soap (base). At first, the mix is either very sour or soapy, but once they balance out, it's neutral like water!

Weak Acid + Strong Base Coaster 🛷

  • Starts at a higher pH because our weak acid (like orange juice) doesn't release as many protons (H+) as our strong acid (lemon juice).
  • Buffer zone (a gentle, straight-ish part) appears before we reach the equivalence point.
  • Equivalence point is higher than pH 7 (it's a bit basic).
  • Ends on a high note at pH ≈ 13.

Did you know? When we're halfway through the titration, the pH is equal to the pKa of the weak acid! For ethanoic acid, it's around 4.76. That's like saying when we're halfway through our pizza, we're at the cheesy-goodness point!
