Key concept - delocalization🚀

  • 🤓 Basic Definition: Delocalization is like a sharefest for electrons! Instead of two atoms keeping their shared electrons between them (localized), delocalization lets electrons roam around and be shared by MORE than two atoms in a molecule or ion.

  • 🌍 Real-World Example: Imagine a pizza shared among two friends. Each person knows exactly which half they have. Now, imagine that same pizza being shared among a whole group. Everyone takes pieces here and there, and the division isn't so clear. This second scenario is like delocalization!

Resonance structures & delocalization🎨

📌 NO2- Ion

  • This ion has two ways (resonance structures) of being drawn.
  • One way shows a single N–O bond, and the other way shows a double N=O bond.
  • BUT! Reality is somewhere in the middle. The bond isn't exactly a single bond or a double bond.
  • The real bond order is 1.5. So, it's a mix, kinda like a 50% chocolate, 50% vanilla swirl ice cream 🍦.

🖼️ 63a vs. 63b

  • 63a shows the two resonance structures. Think of them as two possible "faces" of the same celebrity.
  • 63b is super cool. It uses a dashed line to represent the delocalized electrons. Kind of like showing how a celebrity might look with a mix of two different hairstyles!

🚫 What 63b is NOT

  • It's not a Lewis formula. Lewis formulas are super specific. They show where EVERY electron pair is, bonding or non-bonding.
  • Think of Lewis formulas as super-detailed Instagram pics 📷, while  63b is more like a quick sketch 🎨.
