🎨 Picture It: Imagine a detective trying to solve a puzzle, piecing together clues to come up with a clear picture. That's what scientists did with benzene!

Mystery of C₆H₆👩‍🔬

  • Scientists found out that the molecular formula for benzene is C6H6.
  • 🤔 The question was: "What does it look like?"

Initial guess🧠

  • The 1:1 ratio of carbon to hydrogen hinted at multiple bonds.
  • A cyclic arrangement of carbon atoms was thought of. Think of it like a ring where carbons hold hands in a circle!
  • This structure had alternating single and double bonds. It's like if the carbons were playing a game of "squeeze one hand, then the other".

🌌 Fun Fact: August Kekulé, a famous chemist, is said to have dreamt about the structure of benzene! I wonder if he was counting carbon atoms instead of sheep! 😄

But...there was a twist!🙃

  • The first proposed structure was a lop-sided hexagon because carbon-carbon bond lengths weren’t the same.
  • Imagine drawing a hexagon but some sides are longer than others; kinda wobbly, right?
