🚀 Quick Overview
When one 2s and one 2p atomic orbital come together, they do a little dance and merge to form two sp hybrid orbitals. Imagine it as two friends (2s and 2p) coming together to create a power-duo (sp)!

Formation of sp hybrid orbitals

  • Mix 1 x 2s orbital with 1 x 2p orbital.
  • This gives us 2 spiffy (get it? sp + spiffy 😜) sp hybrid orbitals.

Real-world Example
Imagine you have a chocolate chip and a cookie dough. Mix them together, and you get two chocolate chip cookies. The 2s orbital is like the chocolate chip, the 2p is like the cookie dough, and the sp hybrid orbitals are your two chocolate chip cookies!

Shape & arrangement

  • These sp orbitals arrange themselves in a straight line, just like two kids holding hands and standing 180° apart from each other.
  • Imagine holding a light saber (or a really long ruler) with both hands. The angle between your hands? Yep, that's 180°!
