Hello young chemists! Ever wondered how those halogenoalkanes get their fancy names? Let's dive right in! And remember, chemistry isn't just about beakers and labs, it's everywhere! 🌍💡

Basic rule of naming halogenoalkanes

The position of the halogen is determined by a locant on the main carbon chain.

  • 📖 Think of locants as apartment numbers in a building. Just like you’d need to know which apartment (or "locant") your friend lives in to visit them, molecules use locants to indicate where a particular atom or group resides.

Handy halogen prefixes

(Now, Table 11 wasn't given, but imagine a fancy table that lists halogens and their prefixes. Something like this:)

  • F (Fluorine) ➡️ Fluoro
  • Cl (Chlorine) ➡️ Chloro
  • Br (Bromine) ➡️ Bromo
  • I (Iodine) ➡️ Iodo

  • 🌍 Real-World Example: Ever had salt (NaCl) on your fries? The 'Cl' in it stands for Chlorine. So, Chlorine isn't just in pools but also in your snacks!

Single halogen on methane & ethane

If methane or ethane has just one halogen, the locant isn't mentioned because it's the same wherever you place it.

  • For instance: A molecule with one bromine on ethane is simply "bromoethane", NOT "1-bromoethane".
  • 🍔 Think of it like ordering a cheeseburger. If you ask for a burger with just cheese, they won't ask where you want the cheese. It's always on top of the patty!
