Optical isomers - the basics🎈

You know how you have a left and a right hand? They look similar but are mirror images of each other. Optical isomers, or enantiomers, are like the molecular version of that!

Chiral carbon & its dance moves🍭

Chiral Carbon: A carbon atom that is bonded to four different atoms or groups of atoms. Think of it as the carbon with four different dance partners! 💃

  • Also called: stereocentre or asymmetric centre.
  • Optical Activity: Its unique ability to make plane-polarized light twist and turn, kinda like how your fidget spinner rotates!

Penicillamine - not just another compound🔍

  • It's used to treat arthritis.
  • Structure: C5H11NO2S.
  • In its structure, only Carbon-2 is the superstar chiral carbon! 🌟

Drawing enantiomers🎨

  • Structural Formulas: Like a basic sketch. Shows how atoms connect, but doesn't reveal the 3D magic of enantiomers.
  • Stereochemical Formulas: The 3D art piece! 🎨 Shows you the direction of bonds using special symbols.
  • Remember the bond styles:
    • Line bonds: Regular lines.
    • Wedge bonds: Come closer to you.
    • Dash bonds: Go away from you.
  • Drawing an enantiomer? 🖌️ Just sketch its mirror image!
