The basics

Think of the course as a triathlon, with three main events: Paper 1, Paper 2, and the Higher Level (HL) essay. Let's break these down.

Textual analysis

Remember the thrill of opening a surprise gift? That's pretty much what Paper 1 is like.

What's Inside the Box?

  • You'll find two "unseen" non-literary passages. By "unseen," we mean texts that you've never met before – like surprise party guests!
  • These passages will be of two different text types. You could compare it to meeting an astronaut and a ballerina at the same party – they're both people, but they're very different!

SL vs HL - party choices

  • If you're taking Standard Level (SL), you have to choose one of these passages and write an analysis on it, like having a one-on-one conversation with either the astronaut or the ballerina for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • If you're going Higher Level (HL), it's like engaging both the astronaut and the ballerina in a conversation, analysing both passages in 2 hours and 15 minutes. You've got to be a social butterfly here!
