This study area examines the relationship between literary works and their settings in time and space. Texts can be influenced by or reflective of the time and place they originate from, and can influence our understanding of different times, places, and cultures.

	<li>Timeless: Not affected by the passage of time or changes in fashion.</li>
	<li>Bound: Confined or restricted to a particular condition.</li>
	<li>Tension: The state of being stretched tight, a relationship between ideas or qualities with conflicting demands or implications.</li>
	<li>Rhetorical element: Use of language to persuade or influence.</li>
	<li>Value Judgement: An assessment of something as good or bad in terms of one&#39;s standards or priorities.</li>
</ul>

	Timelessness vs Being bound to a particular time and place in literature: This asks about the extent to which literature may transcend its historical context or be deeply rooted within it. For example, Shakespeare&#39;s plays, such as &quot;Romeo and Juliet&quot;, are often considered timeless because their themes of love and tragedy are universal and relatable across time and cultures. In contrast, a novel like &quot;To Kill a Mockingbird&quot; by Harper Lee is bound to its specific time and place (1930s Southern USA), as it grapples with racism and social inequality.

	<li>
	Tension between facts and fiction: This asks about how literature navigates the relationship between reality (facts) and imagination (fiction). In &quot;1984&quot; by George Orwell, the tension arises as the totalitarian government alters facts to suit its narrative, creating a dystopian fiction that distorts reality.
	</li>
	<li>
	Authorial value judgements: Authors may offer opinions about their subject. For example, in &quot;Pride and Prejudice&quot;, Jane Austen often offers subtle criticisms of the societal norms of her time, indicating her value judgment about the society she lived in.
	</li>
	<li>
	Creation of place: This question asks how a literary work&#39;s setting can contribute to its mood or general feeling. In &quot;Wuthering Heights&quot; by Emily Bronte, the bleak and remote moors contribute to the novel&#39;s gothic and somber mood.
	</li>
	<li>
	Rhetorical element: Literature can persuade readers to share a certain view. In &quot;Animal Farm&quot; by George Orwell, the author persuades us to see the dangers of totalitarian regimes through his allegorical representation of the Soviet Union.
	</li>
	<li>
	Engagement with the concept of youth: Literature often explores themes related to youth and coming of age. In &quot;Catcher in the Rye&quot; by J.D. Salinger, the protagonist&#39;s struggle with his adolescent identity forms the crux of the narrative.
	</li>
	<li>
	Unusual elements of time, place, culture: These elements can make a text more intriguing. Gabriel Garc&iacute;a M&aacute;rquez&#39;s &quot;One Hundred Years of Solitude&quot; presents an unusual element of time and space, utilizing magical realism to draw readers into its unique world.
	</li>
	<li>
	Perception of good and bad: Literature often challenges our notions of morality. In &quot;Lord of the Flies&quot; by William Golding, the children&#39;s descent into savagery prompts readers to question inherent human goodness.
	</li>
	<li>
	Crossing boundaries: Literature can explore physical and mental crossings of boundaries. In &quot;The Great Gatsby&quot; by F. Scott Fitzgerald, characters cross physical boundaries (moving from the Midwest to New York) and societal boundaries (as Gatsby strives to ascend in social status).
	</li>
</ul>
