Concept of levels of intervention

The management of pollution isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. There are different ways to approach the control and management of pollutants. This can be best explained using the three-step pollution management model.

Three-step pollution management model

  • Manage the human activity producing the pollutant: This is about altering human behavior to prevent pollution at its source.
  • Manage the release of the pollutant: This is about controlling how and when pollutants are released into the environment.
  • Manage the long-term impact of the pollutant on the ecosystem: This concerns mitigating the effects of the pollutant on the environment and living organisms over the long term.

Manage the human activity producing the pollutant

  • Substitutes for CFCs: In aerosols, for example, roll-on deodorants can be used instead of aerosol-based ones. Think of switching from a spray deodorant to a roll-on one like choosing to ride a bike instead of driving a car - it's a simple change in habit that can help protect our environment.
  • International Treaties: Ban the use of CFCs, like the Montreal Protocol did. This is similar to governments creating laws to prevent people from throwing trash on the streets.
