Species on earth - from the known to the unknown

Fact: We don't know exactly how many species exist on Earth - sounds crazy, right? But it's true! Current estimates of the total number of species range from a "modest" 5 million to a jaw-dropping 100 million. Imagine, we could be sharing our world with 100 million different kinds of living things!

Key Takeaways:

  • Range of species estimates: 5 million to 100 million
  • Identified species so far: ~1.8 million

Exploring the unexplored

Now here's the twist, even though we've discovered and classified about 1.8 million species, there's still a massive chunk of life we know zilch about. This is like having a book where we've only read the first few chapters!

Think about the thick, verdant canopy of the rainforest, buzzing with life, or the mysterious depths of the ocean. These places are like Earth's secret vaults - potentially teeming with life that we haven't yet discovered.

Key Takeaways:

  • Unexplored habitats: Rainforest canopies, deep ocean floors

Why does it matter

We can't properly calculate extinction rates without knowing the total number of species. It's a bit like trying to count how many cookies are missing from a jar if you didn't know how many were in there to start with!

Key Takeaway:

  • Importance of species count: Necessary for calculating extinction rates
