Global food security index (GFSI)

It's like a food scoreboard for 113 countries, ranking them on how affordable, available, and high-quality their food is. 🍏💰

  • GFSI is based on 28 different indicators which help us understand how secure each country's food situation is.
  • This isn't just about whether people are hungry or not, but also what factors might be influencing their access to food.
  • What happened in 2015? Food security got better almost everywhere! 💪🥳 High-income countries are still leading the pack, but lower-middle-income countries are catching up fast. The Middle East and North Africa region made huge progress. Europe, however, didn't do so well. 📉

Real-World Example: 🌍 Imagine a soccer match where countries are players, their performances depend on the affordability, availability, and quality of their food. In the 2015 season, while Europe was expected to top the leaderboard, it didn't quite meet expectations. On the other hand, countries in the Middle East and North Africa region showed a massive improvement.

Global hunger index (GHI)

If GFSI is the soccer match, GHI is the more serious wrestling match where countries battle it out on who has the least hunger. 💪🍲

  • GHI scores countries on a scale of 0 (no hunger) to 100 (worst hunger), though no country has reached these extremes yet.
  • The GHI is based on four key measures: Undernourishment, Child wasting, Child stunting, and Child mortality. 👶🏽🍼

Real-World Example: 🌍 Like wrestling, countries are constantly trying to get a lower score in GHI, meaning less hunger. Think of the four measures as the wrestling moves - the less a country uses them (meaning lower rates), the better it is doing in the match.

Calorie intake

It's the food energy a person consumes daily. Think of it as fuel for the body machine! ⛽️🏃🏽‍♀️

  • World average: 2,780 kcal/person/day. 🌍
  • The minimum recommended: 1,800 kcal/person/day. ⚠️
  • High-income countries like Austria and the USA are feasting with around 3,400 to 3,800 kcal/person/day. 😋
  • On the other hand, people in low-income countries and specifically in sub-Saharan Africa and Central Africa are barely meeting the minimum recommended intake. 😔
