Alrighty, folks! Grab your passports because we're going on a global culinary adventure. But, spoiler alert, we're not just eating! We're going to explore how giant transnational companies (TNCs), like McDonald's, Kraft and PepsiCo, are reshaping our food systems and even our diets. Get ready, it's time to chew on some delicious geography knowledge!

The rise of 'big food'

Let's kickstart our journey with a term: "Big Food". Sounds ominous, right? Well, Big Food refers to the food and drink TNCs that are making traditional foods take a backseat. They are the companies behind your favourite burger, energy drink, or snack that has a longer shelf-life than a tortoise.

Examples: Think about how often you see a McDonald's, KFC or Starbucks logo in your town or city. That's Big Food in action!

TNCs - fast food, fast money

Remember, TNCs are like that friend always on the lookout for the next money-making scheme. For these corporations, it's all about the moolah! So when sales plateau in High-Income Countries (HICs), they pack their bags and head towards Low-Income Countries (LICs). They bank on the urban migration and rising incomes in these countries to expand their market share.

Examples: You might be surprised to know that KFC is wildly popular in China, and India has over 450 McDonald's outlets.
