Fun Fact: Did you know that over half the world's population now lives in urban areas? And it's only increasing! Picture a bustling city that never sleeps, like New York or Tokyo. Now imagine the whole world turning into such metropolises.

Understanding the numbers 📊

In 1950, only 30% of our global population lived in cities. However, by 2014, the number has increased to 54%. Projections suggest that by 2050, about 66% of the global population will be living in urban areas. Imagine almost 2 out of 3 people you meet living in cities by 2050. Exciting or terrifying? Well, that depends on how you look at it.

A snapshot of today's urbanization 🌍

Currently, North America leads the urbanization race with 82% of its population living in urban areas. Imagine this: If North America was a classroom of 25 students, only around 5 would be living in the countryside! Following closely behind are Latin America and the Caribbean at 80%, and Europe at 73%.

Since 1950, the world's urban population has grown from 746 million (that's about 8 times the current population of the United Kingdom) to a whopping 3.9 billion in 2014.

The future of urbanization - 2050 🚀

By 2050, an additional 2.5 billion people will move to urban areas. That's equivalent to creating a new city the size of Paris every week! The most urban growth will happen in Asia, with India, China, and Nigeria leading the pack.

Think about this: Over a third (33%) of the urban growth by 2050 will happen in just these three countries. India alone is expected to have over 400 million new city dwellers by then. That's more than the current population of the United States!
