Ready for an exciting journey into the world of poverty indices? Trust me, it&#39;s not as dull as it sounds! These indices are like detective tools to understand the wellbeing of people around the world, let&#39;s learn about the Human Poverty Index (HPI)!

Think of HPI as a magnifying glass 🔍 that helps us zoom in on people&#39;s deprivation levels. It&#39;s divided into HPI-1 and HPI-2&mdash;kind of like having two different detective kits for different types of cases.

&nbsp;

Real-world example:&nbsp;If you&#39;ve watched &quot;Sherlock,&quot; think of HPI-1 and HPI-2 as Sherlock&#39;s different kits depending on whether he&#39;s solving a mystery in the busy streets of London (HPI-2) or the rural countryside (HPI-1).

HPI-1 is our tool for investigating poverty in Low-Income Countries (LICs). It zeroes in on three main dimensions:

	<li>Longevity: It&#39;s like looking at a newborn&#39;s crystal ball 🔮 and seeing the probability of them not surviving until 40.</li>
	<li>Knowledge: This one&#39;s a bit of a literacy thermometer 🌡️, measuring the adult illiteracy rate.</li>
	<li>Living standards: Akin to a reality check on the basic needs&mdash;how many people don&#39;t have a steady supply of drinking water 🚰, can&#39;t reach health services 🏥, or have children who are underweight for their age 🧒🍎?</li>
</ul>

Real-world example:&nbsp;Imagine visiting a village in a Low-Income Country (like parts of sub-Saharan Africa) where clean water is scarce, health facilities are miles away, and a lot of adults didn&#39;t get the chance to go to school. HPI-1 would capture this scenario.

HPI-2 is tailored for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. It&#39;s got more data to work with and is like HPI-1 but with an added lens: social exclusion:

<ul>
	<li>Longevity: This time, it&#39;s like predicting if a newborn will live until 60 🧓.</li>
	<li>Knowledge: More sophisticated, as it measures the adult functional illiteracy rate&mdash;people who can read and write but struggle with tasks requiring literacy skills (like reading a bus timetable) 🚍.</li>
	<li>Living standards: Looks at the people living below the income poverty line💲.</li>
	<li>Social exclusion: New in HPI-2, this measures the long-term unemployment rate (people who have been jobless for 12 months or more) 🕑.</li>
</ul>

Real-world example:&nbsp;Picture an industrial city in an OECD country (like Detroit, USA). Despite the overall wealth, some people struggle with reading, others live below the poverty line, and some have been jobless for more than a year. That&#39;s where HPI-2 would come in handy!
