Reshoring of economic activity by TNCs

Did you know companies are moving back home? This shift is called "reshoring". Now, why would they do that? Let's get into it!

The journey of reshoring

  • 1970s & 80s: Companies in high-income countries (HICs) packed their bags and moved manufacturing to low-income countries (LICs). Cheaper labour = more profit. 🌍

  • Fast forward to now: Labour isn't so cheap anymore in LICs, plus other issues are cropping up - people are worried about where their goods come from, working conditions in LICs, delayed deliveries, and rising unemployment back home.

Benefits of reshoring

Think about a boomerang. Companies are coming back and could bring £15.3 billion and 315,000 jobs back to the UK, according to EY.

Real-world example

Ever ordered a bathroom fixture online and had to wait for weeks? Bathrooms.com has you covered. By investing £2.5 million in the UK Midlands, they're now able to manufacture 25% of their products locally and get it to you quicker.
