Get ready for a thrilling expedition as we embark on an exploration of periglacial areas, human activities, and their consequences! Picture yourself bundled up, navigating the cold terrains of Alaska and Greenland! ❄️

Periglacial areas & their hazards

  • What is Periglacial? These are regions at the edges of glaciers. Super chilly and often tough to live in! 🥶
  • Hazards Include: Mass movements, flooding, thermokarst subsidence, low temperatures, poor soils, short growing seasons, and lack of light. Imagine trying to grow tomatoes here! 🍅

Human impact - yamal peninsula, siberia

  • Who's Affected? The Nenets tribe.
  • Why? Oil and gas exploitation.
  • Consequences: Oil leaks, railway subsidence, less fish, pollution, reduced caribou numbers. Kind of like if someone came into your room and made a mess of everything! 🛢️

The arctic national wildlife refuge (ANWR)

  • Location: North-east Alaska.
  • What's There? Tundra, boreal forest, rare birds, and animals! 🐻🦅
  • Problem? Oil companies want to drill, but it's a protected area.
