The Setting: A System Obsolete Before Its Collapse

  • Manchu government = 🚫 modernization. Why?
    • Authoritarian by nature = less power? No way! 🙅
  • Late to the reform party! 🎉 The more they tried, the worse they looked.
  • West's intrusion in the 1840s = 🚫compatible with the imperial system.
  • Real-world example: Imagine using a 1990s computer today. It works, but not as smoothly or quickly as modern ones! 🖥️ vs 🦖

Japan's Double-edged Sword 🗡️

  • A mix of "Wow! 😍" and "Seriously?! 😒"
    • Admiration for Japan’s achievements vs. Dislike for its imperialism.
  • Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5 = Proof! Japan, an Asian nation, could achieve greatness through reform.
  • Real-world example: That popular kid at school who's super talented but sometimes a bully. You want to be like them (but not the mean parts). 🌟👩‍🎤

Revolution's Local Flavor 🍜

  • 1911-12 Revolution? A local dish with a sprinkle of international seasoning.
  • Heaven's mandate shifted from Manchu ➡️ republic. 🌌
  • BUT! It's a half-baked revolution pie 🥧
    • No true participatory politics.
    • Democratic trappings (like a parliament) = for show, not genuine.
    • Old officials = new republic's officials.
    • Real-world example: Painting your old bicycle a new color but not fixing the broken chain. It looks new but doesn’t ride any better. 🚲🎨
