The What and Why: 100 Regiments Campaign
The Basics
- Who: Mao's Communists
- When: August 1940 - December 1940
- Why: To show the GMD (Guomindang or Nationalists) and the Chinese people that the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) was fully committed to fighting Japan. 🇨🇳🆚🇯🇵
In Depth
- What happened before: Japan had been snatching up Chinese provinces since 1938 but took a breather to consolidate their gains.
- Commander: Peng Dehuai
- Troop Numbers: 400,000 Communists in over 100 regiments
- The Fight: Targeted Japanese positions in northern and central China.
Outcomes
- Success at First: The CCP forces managed to overrun Japanese garrisons and damage infrastructure.
- Ouch, a Reversal!: By December, the Japanese had taken back lost territory and killed 100,000 Communists (a quarter of the CCP's forces).
