🎉 Let’s Dive into the Past with a Twist! 🎉

Pressure on Family Dynamics 👪

  • Cultural Revolution's Agenda:
    • Carried on the tradition of enforced conformity that started with collectivisation and the end of private ownership.
    • The goal? Destroy the traditional family structure as it represented one of the 'four olds'.
  • Replacing Families with Mao:
    • Kiddos were taught: Mao & Communist Party = true parents!
    • Example: Think of replacing family game night with a Mao appreciation night. Weird, right?
  • Brainwashing:
    • A Beijing student’s memory: Learnt to say "I love you Chairman Mao" before even saying "I love you" to their own parents.
    • Real-world parallel: Imagine only learning about one superhero, say Superman, and being told he’s the only hero in the world. No Batman or Wonder Woman. That's kinda what these kids experienced but on a much serious note.
  • Spies in the House:
    • Kids = informants against their own families. Any old-world value = big no-no.
    • For instance: Imagine your sibling reporting you for sneaking out at night... but 100x worse.
  • The Fate of the Red Guards:
    • After causing chaos, Mao sent them to rural areas. The result? A generation lost and confused.
    • Nickname: China's "lost generation".
    • Think: Ever felt out of place after coming back from a long summer camp? Now imagine that, but your entire life is turned upside down.
