Setting the Stage 🌩

  • The Calm Before: Prior to the PLA’s intervention, Zhao had been removed, allowing Li Peng and Deng to take full charge.
  • PLA Deployment: By 2 June, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) had a huge force in Beijing - 350,000 soldiers encircling Tiananmen Square.

The PLA's Mission 🎖

  • Commanders' Directive: This wasn't a small operation; PLA commanders saw it as a 'full military campaign'. Their aim? To remove the 'rebels' from Tiananmen Square.
  • All-Out Assault: The instruction was clear: reclaim the Square, no matter the price.
  • Grim Scene: On 3 June, the first shots were fired. By the next day's noon, the protest was crushed.

Aftermath of the Attack 💥

  • The Horror: The remnants of the incident were clear - damaged barricades, garbage from the five-week occupation, and more.
  • The Victims: Exact numbers are murky, but many believe thousands were killed or injured, including innocent bystanders and some PLA soldiers.
  • Silent Airwaves: The government tried to suppress the news, but the scale of the tragedy became known through hospital reports and whispers.
  • Reprisals and Aftermath: Protesters who couldn't flee faced capture and punishment. Sympathetic CCP officials faced the boot, while loyalists were promoted.
