🎉 Fun Fact! Did you know? The 38th parallel is a circle of latitude that is 38 degrees north of the Earth's equatorial plane. It cuts through North and South Korea and has historically been a major point of contention!

Stage 6: Ceasefire and Peace Talks 🕊️

UN Calls for Ceasefire (January 1951)

  • UN forces were pushed south of the 38th parallel.
  • UN resolution proposed on 11 January
    • Immediate ceasefire.
    • Gradual withdrawal of foreign troops from Korea.
    • A 4-power meeting to discuss issues like Taiwan and PRC's UN representation.

💡 Real-world example: Imagine two people fighting over a toy. A third person steps in to mediate and suggests sharing the toy and discussing terms. That's what the UN was trying to do!

US's Dilemma with the UN Resolution

  • Supporting = loss of Korean support + fury of Congress & press.
  • Opposing = potential loss of US support in the UN.
  • US took a chance, betting China would decline (they wanted immediate UN seat and troops out of Korea & Taiwan).

Unlikelihood of Military Victory

  • Victory for either side would likely involve escalation to nuclear warfare.

UN Condemns China (1 February 1951)

  • US proposed resolution passed, naming China as the aggressor.
  • Called for China's withdrawal and continued UN support in Korea.

💡 Real-world example: Think of a football game where one team plays dirty. The referee (like the UN) gives them a yellow card, warning them to play fair.
