Causes
East Germans fleeing to the West 🛄
- Thousands, incognito mode ON, were sneaking out of East Germany with just a suitcase, avoiding the prying eyes of the Stasi (East German secret police). Think of it like an escape room challenge, but 100 times scarier.
- Fun Fact: It wasn't just the common folk. Professionals like engineers and doctors sprinted West first. But soon, even the everyday factory worker and shop assistant followed suit.
- Real-world analogy: Imagine if half the employees at Apple or Walmart just left! That's the kind of worker shortage they had.
- The scoreboard by 1958: 12,000 refugees ditching East Germany every month.
