🇨🇦 🇺🇸 Canada-US Relations during the Cold War
- Canada = strategically essential to the US during the Cold War.
- Eisenhower Era: Friendly relations between the two. They mostly agreed on international security matters.
- Both were anti-communist + supported the US's containment policy against the USSR.
- Twist: Canadian officials thought BOTH US and USSR policies were the culprits behind international tensions.
Example: Imagine two friends blaming each other for spilling a drink. In reality, both nudged the cup.
NORAD (North American Defense Agreement) Details 🚀
- Why? Debate on whether to place nuclear weapons on Canadian land and who gets to call the shots.
- 1957 Signing: Goal - guard the airspace, be on the lookout for any threat from planes, missiles, or even spaceships!
Real-world analogy: Think of NORAD like a sophisticated security system for a house, detecting any unwanted intruders.
- Joint Effort: Royal Canadian Air Force + US Air Force = teamwork in Colorado.
