Nixon’s Covert Goals in Chile

  • Main Idea: Nixon wanted to influence events in Chile. He wasn’t Team Allende!
  • Dollar Power! The CIA had a budget of $8 million to use in Chile (1970-1973). They spent $3 million in 1972. (Imagine what you could buy with that!)
  • Secrets Exposed: The Church Committee Report in 1975 spilled the tea, saying the US was sneaky in Chile between 1963 and 1975.

The US Diplomatic Duality

  • US Diplomatic Strategy: Be cool on the outside, but plot secretly.
    • They played it "correct but cool" with Allende.
    • But the US tried to pressure Allende's government in the shadows.
  • Example: It’s like acting friendly to someone in school but secretly planning to take their spot as the class president!

Political Shenanigans

  • CIA’s Secret Activities
    • Fund opposition parties.
    • Cozy up with Chile’s armed forces.
    • Support media against Allende (e.g., El Mercurio newspaper got a slice of the CIA money pie).
    • Help organize strikes to weaken Allende.
  • Economic Pressure
    • Nixon's approach: No more economic agreements with Chile!
    • Tried to cut foreign aid to hurt Chile’s economy.
    • Nixon got international buddies and companies to join this 'economic squeeze' mission.
  • But Not All Bad: Nixon allowed humanitarian aid and cleared $200 million Chilean debt to the US. Plus, Allende found new money sources, around $900 million, and a $100 million loan from IMF.
