The Cultural Landscape in the 1920s 🎨

  • Weimar Germany = Time of cultural experimentation and innovation.
  • 🎭 Real-world example: Think of the Roaring Twenties in the U.S. - jazz, flapper dresses, and wild parties. Germany had its own version of this!

Nazi Regime's Cultural Changes 🚫

  • Nazis aimed to control and coordinate all cultural activities.
  • Established Reich Chamber of Culture in 1933.
  • Under the control of the Propaganda Ministry.
  • 📚 Real-world example: Imagine a school librarian banning all books they don't like. That's kind of what the Nazis did by burning books of Jews, socialists, and others in 1933!
  • Result: Many authors fled Germany, e.g., Thomas Mann, Heinrich Mann, and Bertolt Brecht.
  • The vibrant Weimar art scene was called 'degenerate' and blamed for Germany's post-war spiritual decline.

Film & the Nazi Regime 🎥

  • Dual purpose: Relaxation and propaganda.
  • Before every movie? A newsreel glorifying Nazi achievements.
  • Goebbels = big movie buff, knew films were powerful.
  • From 1933 to 1945: Over 1,000 films produced, but only one-sixth were full-blown propaganda.
  • 🌟 Star Director: Leni Riefenstahl. Think of her as the Spielberg of Nazi cinema. "Triumph of the Will" = Oscar-worthy in propaganda terms.
